Don’t get Beyonce’s BLUES, IVY BLUES

May 18, 2017

After the birth of their daughter, Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s filed an application to register their daughter’s name BLUE IVY as a federal trademark.  This application has been challenged by a LA-based event planning company. The firm argued it was operating under that name for three years before the child was born.
There are a number of rules that control whether you can get a name or logo as a trademark. Like most properties, first in place is first in right, meaning whoever uses it first usually wins. That, among other things, is why you can not use Coca Cola, or Google. If anything, they were already taken a long time ago.
As it is reported that Beyonce is to deliver twins in mid 2017, they should hire a branding and trademark attorney to make sure the names they pick for their children are available in all relevant trademark registries in the world, so they can avoid singing the blues again.
